Cold Process Soap Performance
Acceleration | Discolouration | Separation | Oil Temp | Lye Water Temp |
Moderate | Tan | None | 41ºC | 45ºC |
We experienced a moderate amount of acceleration but no separation. Our regular test of fragrance oil in cold process soap is to add the fragrance to the melted oils then add the lye water, however, being human we forgot to add the fragrance first. Oops! This turned out to be a happy accident with this fragrance oil. Once we realized our mistake, we chose to hand stir in the fragrance when we reached a light trace. We quickly felt the soap batter thickening as we stirred. Once we were confident all the fragrance had been incorporated we poured the soap into the mold. Fortunately, it remained smooth and poured fluidly into the mold. After 24 hours, we observed that the outer edges had discolored yellow but the gelled area in the center did not discolor. The scent was strong and more of the woody notes came through. After 30 days, the soap in the areas that did not gel discolored tan, while the gelled area discolored to a light tan. The scent had faded slightly but was still pleasantly strong. We would recommend that this fragrance be hand stirred in at a light trace and to plan working quickly.
