Description
Hydrosols, also known as Hydrolats or Floral Waters, are normally produced during the distillation of essential oils. The plant matter is distilled with water and steam and the distillate is then simply separated into an oil fraction - the essential oil, and a water fraction - the hydrosol.
The hydrosol contains water-soluble compounds found in the plant along with a minute amount of residual essential oil left over from the separation process. This makes it a good source of nutrients for microbial growth. As such, it comes pre-preserved with an ECOCERT-approved blend of Benzyl Alcohol, Sodium Benzoate and Potassium Sorbate. A trace amount of Ethanol is also used to disperse the preservative.
Kanuka is similar in action to Manuka, both of which have been traditionally used by Maori for skin, respiratory and digestive ailments. Kanuka Hydrosol makes a great addition to washes and cleansers particularly for blemish prone skin.
